HOW TO HAVE A SAFE THANKSGIVING WITH YOUR PUP

Thanksgiving is the time of year that’s all about family. Your pets are part of your family, if not all of your family, you wouldn’t want to leave them out and you don't have to. There are a few things to remember that will help make this holiday season happy and healthy.

  • Turkey: Turkey skin is covered in butter and seasoning, which can upset your dog’s tummy, but turkey meat itself is a healthy treat to give to your dog on Thanksgiving. Avoid cooked bones from turkey and make sure all leftovers are out of reach for your pup. Cooked bones have a high chance of splintering and getting caught in your dog’s throat. Instead try raw marrow bones and raw turkey necks, freeze dried or frozen. Both are great for their teeth and help keep them busy while guests are around.
  • Sweet Potato and Pumpkin: Sweet potato is a great treat to give your dog on thanksgiving, as well as pumpkin. Both are perfect for upset tummies and overall, help aid in digestion. They are great sources of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants. Stop and get some canned sweet potato or canned pumpkin for your dog’s Thanksgiving dinner while you're out shopping for your Thanksgiving dinner!
  • Cranberries: There are a lot of health benefits from cranberries. They are high in nutrients and antioxidants. Cranberries and cranberry supplements help support the urinary tract system and help prevent urinary tract infections. They also help boost your dog’s immune system!
  • Vegetables: Most of the other vegetables from your Thanksgiving dinner are great choices for your dog, like green beans and carrots. Avoid anything with onions.

Not Safe To Share

  • Dressing: Avoid giving your dog dressing from Thanksgiving dinner, as it is usually made with a lot of seasoning.
  • Gravy: As with dressing, Thanksgiving gravy is usually made with a lot of seasoning and sauces that are unhealthy for your pet and can cause digestive issues. Instead of giving your dog the same gravy you make for yourself, make him some turkey bone broth or you can pick some up in the store.

With these helpful tips, you can make a thanksgiving dinner plate for your dog as well! Your dog will be happy to eat that healthy treat with you and your family! Just remember not to feed him too much, dogs can bloated and full too.

For dessert, pick up some Thanksgiving treats and cookies or give your dog a raw bone he will love!
