The Scoop on Natural Cat Litter

The Scoop on Natural Cat Litter

Because dogs and cats are now more than ever considered a member of the family, our desire to provide them with the highest quality, most natural food & supplies is at an all time high. With that said, are you up to date on the litter standard? Gone are the days of grey clay pebbles and odor killing blue stones; it’s all about the natural litter.

So why should you make the switch to an all-natural cat litter? Here’s the scoop on synthetic litter:

1.Clumping litter is designed to form a hard, insoluble mass when it gets wet. These clumping litters absorb many times their weight in fluids. It also produces a ton of fine dust when stirred (as when a cat scratches around to bury a recent deposit). This fine dust gets on everything; your cat, you, your floor and anything your cat comes in contact with. They even end up breathing it in.

2.When cats clean themselves everything their tongue comes into contact with is ingested. Kittens especially tend to ingest a lot of litter when they are first learning to use the box. Once the litter is inside the cat, it expands, forming a mass and coating the interior thus causing dehydration by drawing fluids out of the cat, and compounding the problem by preventing any absorption of nutrients or fluids.

3.Many clay litters also come with less than pleasant heavy perfume “deodorizers”, that very deodorizer you avoid by holding your breath when pouring new litter. Now think about that powerful “scent,” and remember that your cat with a sensitive olfactory system is surrounded by that smell at least 3 times a day! These deodorizers can also irritate cats with asthma or breathing problems already.

4.Environmentally, clay litter is helping your cat take over the world, and not in a good way. The Bureau of Land Management estimates that some 8 billion pounds of the stuff winds up in landfills every year. That’s 8 billion pounds of non-biodegradable litter...you can help do something about this by using a flushable cat litter.

After learning the facts, every loving cat owner wants to make the switch. But how do you know what cat litters are best? Cats are finicky creatures and any change to their environment can have dire consequences to an owner's carpet. Blue Buffalo Walnut Cat Litter has stood out among the pack, and has even caught the attention of Cat Daddy Jackson Galaxy. This litter is made of crushed walnut shells and is incredibly absorbent and produces little to no dust. Whichever litter you decide on, we recommend that it’s virtually dust-free, flushable and free of unnatural deodorizers and chemicals.

Just a tip from a long haired cat owner, make sure whatever natural cat litter you decide on isn't too fine or easily shredded otherwise it will end up in their fur and everywhere they sit.
